An abortion is a medical procedure that ends a pregnancy. Every woman's reasons and feelings are different. This article is not here to judge, only to explain what your body may go through and where you can find support.
The main types of abortion
- Medical abortion: according to the NHS, used for pregnancies under about 10 weeks. You take two medicines: mifepristone first, then misoprostol 1 to 2 days later. Around 4 to 6 hours after the second medicine, the pregnancy begins to pass through the vagina. This can happen at a clinic or at home.
- Surgical abortion: usually used after 10 weeks. Pregnancy tissue is removed from the womb with suction or forceps. You are offered local anaesthetic, sedation or general anaesthetic, and most people go home the same day.
The World Health Organization notes that abortion is very safe when carried out by trained providers with quality medicines. Serious complications are mainly linked to unsafe methods.
How your body recovers
You may have tummy cramps and pain for a few days; ibuprofen or paracetamol can help. Vaginal bleeding can last for several weeks.
