For many women the second trimester is the most comfortable part of pregnancy. Nausea usually eases, energy returns, and one of the sweetest moments arrives: feeling your baby move for the first time.

When do movements start?

According to NHS guidance, you will usually start to feel your baby move between 16 and 24 weeks of pregnancy. First-time mothers may not notice movements until after 20 weeks. The earliest movements are subtle: a flutter, a bubble or a gentle tap. Later they turn into stronger kicks and rolls.

What is normal?

  • There is no set number of movements you should feel each day, because every baby is different.
  • What matters is getting to know your own baby's usual pattern over time.
  • Having busy and quiet periods during the day is normal.

Tips for tuning in

Sit or lie comfortably now and then and focus on your baby. Note what movements feel like and when your baby is most active.
