Sometimes a person is not looking for a solution, just for someone to listen. How we talk and listen, with a friend, a community member or in an online chat, shapes the quality of our relationships and our wellbeing.

Why connection matters

The UK's National Health Service (NHS) notes that good relationships are important for mental wellbeing, and that connecting with others builds a sense of belonging and emotional support. It even lists listening to others as one of the ways of giving.

What is active listening?

According to NHS Scotland material, active listening helps a person feel accepted, heard, understood and safe. It builds trust and helps people work out their own solutions.

  • Keep eye contact and show open body language.
  • Do not interrupt, rush or guess what the person will say.
  • Paraphrase what you heard to check you have understood.
  • Ask open questions beginning with "what" or "how".
  • Follow the other person's lead and invite them to say more about points they raise.
