Is your period late, or do you have a hunch? Here is what to know about when to take a pregnancy test and how to read the result.
What does the test detect?
All pregnancy tests detect the hormone human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG). It begins to appear about 6 days after fertilisation and is produced by the placenta once a fertilised egg attaches to the womb.
When should you test?
Tests are most reliable from the first day of a missed period. If your cycle is irregular, wait at least 21 days after unprotected sex. Some sensitive tests can work before a missed period, but false negatives are more likely then. First-morning urine contains more hCG.
How to test properly
- Check the expiry date.
- Read the instructions for your brand carefully.
- Use a timer and do not read the result too early or much too late.
- Avoid drinking excessive fluids beforehand.
