A skincare routine does not have to be complicated. The step that dermatologists and health services emphasise most is sun protection. A simple daily habit can go a long way in protecting your skin.

How to choose a sunscreen

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends looking for three features:

  • Broad spectrum: protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • SPF 30 or higher.
  • Water resistant: the label says 40 or 80 minutes, which is how long protection lasts while swimming or sweating.

The UK's National Health Service (NHS) likewise advises an SPF of at least 30 and at least 4-star UVA protection.

How much to apply

The NHS notes that most people use too little. An adult needs around 6 to 8 teaspoons to cover the whole body. It recommends applying sunscreen twice: 30 minutes before going out and again just before you head outside.
